Before you specify a coating, define the service.
APPLICATION / REFERENCE IMAGERYThe questions that connect a surface to a useful technical discussion.
Start with the substrate
Identify the material, its existing condition and any previous finish. Describe preparation constraints rather than assuming a new product can be applied to every surface.
Describe the service environment
Record where the surface will be used and what it may be exposed to. Include a written project specification when one exists. Product selection needs an assessment of the actual requirement.
Agree the evidence needed
Ask which technical documents, sample evaluations and acceptance criteria are needed. A product category name does not establish suitability for a specific project.
An illustrative starting brief
“We are assessing a coating for an existing steel installation. The surface condition, preparation access and service environment need review. We have a customer specification and would like to agree which samples and supporting documents are needed.” This describes a project without assuming that a particular resin family or finish is already suitable.
Keep constraints visible
If access, downtime, application equipment or working conditions are constrained, include that information early. Record who owns the specification and who can approve the next step. A missing answer can be listed as an open question; it should not be replaced with an assumed technical value.
Make it relevant to your project.
Bring the application and your requirements into a structured brief.
